Transport unions hit out at Trump’s order for threatening jobs

GLOBAL transport unions attacked US President Donald Trump yesterday for causing airline chaos following his travel ban on citizens of seven majority-Muslim nations.
International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) president Paddy Crumlin said the executive order denying visas to travellers from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia and Libya — sparking worldwide protests — was threatening the jobs of aircrew from those nations.
“The ITF condemns the escalation of the US government against immigrants,” he said.
“Airlines have been forced to turn away passengers, although the scope of the ban is still not clear. The uncertainty over the rules and the chaos in some airports is not helping.”
The International Air Transport Association said the ban applied to pilots and cabin crew from the seven countries, even though all flight crew who are not US citizens already need a special visa to enter the country.
The US Senate judiciary committee was expected to approve Mr Trump’s appointment of Republican Senator Jeff Sessions as attorney general later yesterday after Democratic filibusters delayed the vote on Tuesday.
Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein quoted a Washington Post article claiming Mr Sessions helped draft several of Mr Trump’s executive orders, including the travel ban.
“How could we possibly conclude that this nominee is going to be independent?” Ms Feinstein demanded.
In a written submission to the committee, Mr Sessions denied the allegation, but admitted: “During the campaign, President Trump sought my and my staff’s input on a number of matters on which I have taken very public positions as a senator.
“However, it would be impossible for me to know the degree to which that input was relied upon in formulating or drafting the executive orders in question.”
Democratic Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer also laid into Mr Trump’s appointment of judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, filling the seat left vacant for almost a year by the death of arch-conservative Antonin Scalia.
If confirmed, Mr Gorsuch would restore the court’s conservative majority. But Mr Schumer said he had “serious doubts” about his nomination, saying he “had repeatedly sided with corporations over working people and demonstrated a hostility toward women’s rights.”
And teachers’ union AFT president Randi Weingarten wrote to members and supporters urging them to lobby their senators to reject pro-private school education secretary-designate Betsy DeVos after the health, education, pensions and labour committee sent her appointment to the Senate for approval on Tuesday.

I never thought of the fact that the ban affects airport workers, especially flight attendants and pilots.
Even though my family and I are from the Caribbean we cancelled all our international travel plans.
An immigrant-owned travel agency I work with also had a meeting tonight and cancelled our long-anticipated trip to Dubai.
We know better than to assume the ban won’t affect other immigrants. It’s probably only a matter of time..

I hope things will improve for your family. Resistance works. Even the hardline Trump administration already had to make a few concessions (eg, for British people) because of worldwide strong opposition.
You are right about other immigrants. Eg, a (non-Muslim) Armenian Austrian pianist had to cancel her United States tour because of new US rules:

For us, it’s not about resistance. We were advised not to travel. Spending our vacation time inside the US economy, is actually beneficial to the US. We leave the resisting to the citizens who can’t be deported.
I heard he wants to “destroy” those amendments/concessions, so we’ll see how long they last. I’m not feeling hopeful about this at all.

I think eventually the opposition will grow, even among Trump voters who will see that the promised better standard of living does not materialize.
