TWO peace activists were released on bail yesterday after being arrested at the weekend trying to disarm fighter jets bound for Saudi Arabia.

Methodist minister Daniel Woodhouse and Quaker activist Sam Walton broke into BAE Systems Warton site in Lancashire on Sunday and attempted to stop the warplanes leaving the airbase.

The government has confirmed that British Typhoon and Tornado fighter jets have been used by the Saudi airforce in the Yemen conflict which campaigners say makes them “complicit in Saudi war crimes.”

In a statement issued on their release the two men said: “BAE security found us just metres from warplanes bound for Saudi Arabia.

“We’re gutted that we couldn’t disarm a plane and stop it being used to carry out air strikes in Yemen. We could have saved lives by preventing Saudi war crimes in Yemen.”

A panel of UN experts reported last week that the killing of civilians in Yemen “may amount to war-crimes” and said the violations committed “are sufficiently widespread to reflect either an ineffective targeting process or a broader policy of attrition against civilian infrastructure.”
