Breaking: Trump Signs Executive Orders Reviving Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines

President Donald Trump has signed two executive actions today to advance construction of the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines, two projects blocked by the Obama administration.
“We’re never going to back down,” said Bobbi Jean Three Legs of the Standing Rock reservation in South Dakota, when Democracy Now! spoke to her Monday and asked what her message was for Trump.
Above, watch our report from Park City, Utah at the Sundance Film Festival, where water protectors, joined by actor and activist Shailene Woodley, walked down Main Street and linked arms to block the entrance to a Chase Sapphire lounge, in order to protest the connection of one of the festival’s leading sponsors to investment in the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Just two days after millions of people poured into the streets of Washington, D.C., and cities around the world for the historic Women’s March on Washington, President Trump has reinstated the controversial “global gag rule,” which women’s rights advocates fear will increase unsafe abortions around the world. The policy originated in the Reagan era and bans U.S. funding for any international healthcare organizations that perform abortions or advocate for the legalization of abortion or even mention it, even if those activities are funded by non-U.S. money. Trump signed the order surrounded by seven other men. We speak speak to Planned Parenthood’s Dawn Laguens.

Over 100,000 people gathered in San Francisco for a massive women-led march against Donald Trump. Speakers and performers included folk legend Joan Baez and Malkia Cyil of the Center for Media Justice. Democracy Now! correspondent Juan Carlos Dávila filed this report.
A Nebraska legislator who shared a tweet that suggested women’s march protesters were not attractive enough to be sexually assaulted announced Wednesday that he is resigning, effective Monday. He previously had been fined for having cybersex on a state computer. Nebraska state Sen. Bill Kintner (Republican) held a press conference Wednesday morning, shortly before the legislature was set to discuss whether to kick him out: here.

Earlier today, Donald Trump signed two executive orders to advance construction of the Keystone XL pipeline and the Dakota Access Pipeline.
It is clear Donald Trump is willing to prioritize the fossil fuel industry over the health and well-being of our planet. If these pipelines are built, it will have devastating effects on the climate, our land and our water. Additionally, it goes against the will of millions of people who stood up to oppose these pipelines in the first place.
Once again, we must make our voices heard all over the country saying we do not accept Trump’s effort to resume construction of these harmful pipelines.

The big oil companies that want to build these pipelines have terrible records of negligence and spills. Just one spill threatens the safety of water for millions of Americans.
In 2015, President Obama rejected the Keystone XL pipeline over environmental concerns, and last December construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline was halted due to the relentless pressure from water protectors and activists on the ground.
Moving forward with the Dakota Access Pipeline will threaten the sacred grounds of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. For months, water protectors braved freezing temperatures, arrest, and police brutality to defend their land and water.
Now that Trump has signed these executive orders, it’s on us to hold him accountable and mobilize to stop the construction of these dangerous pipelines.
We must continue to fight against the threat of climate change and for the communities whose health and safety are threatened by these pipelines.
