Motorists join lawsuit over VW emissions

BRITISH motorists have joined a lawsuit against car giant Volkswagen which could cost the German transnational billions of pounds in the wake of the emissions scandal, a law firm said yesterday.

Thousands of current and previous owners could each be awarded up to £4,000 for affected vehicles, lawyers said.

Volkswagen Group admitted that 11 million vehicles worldwide — 1.2m in Britain — were fitted with a “defeat device” to switch engines to a cleaner mode when they were being tested for emissions.

Jacqueline Young, head of group litigation at Slater & Gordon, said: “VW has shown utter contempt not just for the rights and health of their UK consumers but also for the environment.”

Volkswagen has agreed a £11.8 billion settlement with US authorities and owners of affected vehicles.
