Brazil: Temer ally swept up in latest Car Wash corruption arrests
Friday 18th November 2016
FORMER Rio State governor Sergio Cabral was arrested yesterday in Brazil’s Car Wash corruption scandal. Mr Cabral, an ally of coup President Michel Temer, is accused by police of taking millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for building contracts linked to state oil firm Petrobras.
Mr Cabral is a member of Mr Temer’s scandal-ridden PMDB party, which led the ousting of president Dilma Rousseff this year.
On Wednesday another former Rio governor, Anthony Garotinho, was arrested in a separate investigation.
He is accused of helping to buy votes by fraudulently enrolling people in a poverty reduction program.
And riot police in Rio de Janeiro pepper sprayed protesters outside a meeting where MPs were discussing austerity cuts in response to deficits caused by the Olympic Games.
The federal government has refused to bail the state out while public workers and pensioners have gone unpaid for months.
