President Obama On Dakota Access Pipeline

Dakota Access was told by the federal government not to drill close to the Missouri River. Well guess where they’re drilling. Will the Obama administration step in? Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down.

Native American artefacts concealed for 10 days
THE US firm building an oil pipeline through native American land concealed discoveries of ancient artefacts for 10 days, it emerged on Wednesday.
The revelation coincided with riot police pepper-spraying protesters in North Dakota and the day after US President Barack Obama signalled that the pipeline could be rerouted.
Public Service Commission chairwoman Julie Fedorchak said she was “extremely disappointed” that Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners had waited 10 days before reporting last month’s discovery of stone cairns and other artefacts.
Leaders of the Sioux nation and supporters from outside the Standing Rock reservation oppose the pipeline as it threatens those ancient monuments and may contaminate water supplies.
The panel could decide to levy fines of up to $200,000 (£160,000), Ms Fedorchak said, though even that small amount would be unlikely, she admitted.
After an inspection, company consultants decided to divert the construction by about 50 feet, even though they determined there was a “low likelihood” that any additional artifacts were buried nearby.
The State Historic Preservation Office did agree with the company’s plan on how to proceed after the artifacts were found.
On Wednesday afternoon, protesters tried to build a wooden pedestrian bridge across a creek to enter private land where construction work is going ahead.
After officers dismantled the bridge, the protesters then attempted to cross by boat or swimming, Morton county sheriff spokeswoman Donnell Hushka said. Two arrests were reported.
Volunteer medics treated some of the protesters for hypothermia during the confrontation near the mouth of the Cannonball river.
In recent days, supporters around the world had been virtually “checking in” to the reservation on Facebook, creating thousands of false presences to frustrate police attempts to track protesters physically entering the area.
In an interview with online magazine NowThis on Tuesday, Mr Obama called for “peace” and “restraint” while the US Army Corps of Engineers, the federal authority in the reservation, examines “whether there are ways to reroute this pipeline.”
The president said: “There’s an obligation for protesters to be peaceful and there’s an obligation for authorities to show restraint.
“I want to make sure that as everybody is exercising their constitutional rights to be heard, that both sides are refraining from situations that might result in people being hurt.”
