From Associated Press today:

PARIS — A former French budget minister is going on trial for hiding his wealth in tax havens around the world while, at the same time, being the country’s top official in charge of fighting tax evasion.

Jerome Cahuzac is to appear in a Paris court Monday on charges of tax fraud and money laundering that saw him resign in 2013 in one of the biggest political scandals under President Francois Hollande.

The 64-year-old former cosmetic surgeon is accused of concealing at least 687,000 euros ($766,000) in income from tax authorities in 2009-2012. He’s also accused of laundering money in 2003-2013 through foreign bank accounts in Switzerland and Singapore and dummy companies in Panama and the Seychelles. …

On Monday, the Paris prosecutor’s office said it has requested a criminal trial for former President Nicolas Sarkozy over suspected illegal overspending on his failed 2012 re-election campaign. It’s now up to the judges to decide whether Sarkozy must stand trial.

FORMER French president Nicolas Sarkozy could face trial over illegal overspending on his failed 2012 re-election campaign after the Paris prosecutor recommended charges yesterday.

The prosecutor’s office said it had asked investigating judges to send Mr Sarkozy and 13 others to court.

In February, the judges issued preliminary charges of illegal campaign financing over an invoice system his party and the Bygmalion firm allegedly used to conceal unauthorised overspending.

He was accused of spending €17 million (£14m) over the €22.5m (£19m) cap.

Mr Sarkozy announced his bid for next year’s presidential election last month and faces a selection contest in November against a dozen other candidates.

But even if judges approve a prosecution, a trial is unlikely before next spring’s election.

If Mr Sarkozy is elected, he would gain presidential immunity and would not be able to stand trial in the case before the end of the five-year term.

FRANCE: Former budget minister Jerome Cahuzac was sentenced to three years in prison yesterday in possibly the biggest political scandal to hit President Francois Hollande’s government.

Mr Cahuzac was found guilty of tax fraud and money-laundering by a Paris court for hiding his wealth in tax havens around the world.

The court said he had committed irregularities “of an extraordinary and rare seriousness.”
