Poem on British Blairite politician Owen Smith

From daily The Morning Star in Britain:

Coup Plotter‘s Elegy for Self: To be read in the Voice of Owen Smith MP

Tuesday 23rd August 2016

I offered them free ice cream

but they would not eat.

I kept pulling the trigger,

but the gun kept jamming and he would not die.

My voice is lost, and I have repeatedly

said nothing in interviews I’ll spend

the rest of my days paying people to forget.

My prime of career was but a rickety bicycle

with two punctures and no saddle.

My victory feast was but a prehistoric sponge cake

and a plastic cup of lemonade gone flat

during the Labour government before last.

My bunch of grapes, fresh from the vine,

was but a bowl of diarrhoea.

My left-wing rhetoric was but an ill-fitting codpiece.

This disco’s over and I have not scored.

My leadership prospects are but a lock-up garage full of

unsaleable t-shirts and ventriloquists’ dummies

that look like more authentic versions of me.

I’ve tried sleep but the dream’s always

I’ve mislaid my boxer shorts

and my tie’s on fire.

Britain: Labour’s anti-Corbyn plotters plan rival parliamentary grouping: here.

OWEN SMITH will “fight tooth and nail” to block Brexit if he becomes Labour leader, according to his campaign pitch today.

The Pontypridd MP will say that Labour should not accept a formal separation from Brussels until the terms of Britain’s new relationship have been approved in a second referendum or general election.

He will say: “The British people were lied to by the Leave campaign. They deserve to have a say on whatever exit deal the Tories strike with the EU.

“Theresa May says that ‘Brexit means Brexit,’ but nobody knows what Brexit looks like.

“It could involve trashing workers’ rights and environmental protections, opening our NHS up to foreign competition, making it harder for us to trade with our neighbours and damaging our economy.”

Mr Smith thinks that it was “deeply irresponsible” that leader Jeremy Corbyn had accepted the result of the referendum and conceded that Article 50 should be triggered.

He will say: “I’m a passionate pro-European and I will fight tooth and nail to keep us in the EU.”

But Labour Leave chairman Brendan Chilton told the Star: “I think it’s highly irresponsible to try to block the decision of the British people to leave the European Union, considering in particular that the overwhelming majority of Labour constituencies voted to leave with such high numbers.

“If Labour is to re-engage with those voters and hold their support going into the next general election, we need to accept the outcome of the referendum and support the decision of the people.”

Lilliputian Smith, the would-be great dictator!

LABOUR right winger Owen Smith, in his desire to satisfy the big bosses and the bankers, is going even further than the Tories after the EU referendum result, when the working class and the majority of the middle class dismissed all the threats of doom to come by voting to leave the EU and end the grip of its Brussels dictatorship.

Smith says that he wants another referendum and that he will try to stop PM May formally triggering Brexit unless she promises a referendum on the final deal, or calls a general election to approve it, i.e. calls another referendum disguised as a single issue general election.

His line is that the stupid masses fell for a pack of lies, and that it is his job to put them right, by forcing another referendum onto them, in order to peddle his own even bigger pack of lies, accompanied no doubt by a helpful shutdown of sections of industry by the bosses, creating a major political crisis to help the workers rethink their mistaken vote.

Already a legal challenge is under way to try to ensure Parliament must approve Article 50 being triggered, despite the government saying this can happen without the need for a House of Commons vote. Presumably if the ignorant masses continue to reject the EU in a second referendum, Smith the great patriot, in the national interest, will seek to carry out a coup, through parliament, that the House of Commons is sovereign, and therefore it can put two fingers up to the mass of the working people, as long as the police and the armed forces earn their money by maintaining order in the streets using their much-rehearsed shoot-to-kill riot suppression techniques.

Owen Smith, in his rush to be the true servant of the bosses and the bankers, is heading towards maintaining the UK’s membership of the EU through a civil war and the imposition of a right-wing dictatorship.

Certainly, such dictatorial trends often come from unexpected quarters. Mussolini emerged from the right wing of social democracy, while Oswald Mosley was a Labour Party star, whose new party was founded to deal with the problem of mass unemployment, and was thought to be left!

Certainly, Labour’s right wing is distinguished by its devotion to the interests of the bosses and the bankers. Certainly, they are the most rabid opponents of the hundreds of thousands of new members that are joining the Labour Party from the ranks of the working class and the radical middle class.

They have just carried through a legal action to stop 130,000 new Labour Party members voting in the leadership election and are apparently discussing mass purges of the new membership to get rid of the working class element that has flocked into the Labour Party, as well as legal actions to steal Labour’s property!

The right wing longs for the days when a combination of support from the billionaire capitalist media and the nod from the trade union bureaucracy secured them MPs’ jobs for life – the good old days indeed! They are aghast that the ignorant masses can decide on such vital matters as their careers!

In fact, they aim to get their immediate revenge through splitting the Labour Party. The Tories are boasting that their opposite numbers in the House of Commons are telling them to call a general election, because of their belief that Labour will be wiped out, Corbyn destroyed, and the masses taught a big lesson – that is that they must not rock the job prospects of Labour Party careerists.

In fact, the Tories have already been assured by Smith: ‘What you won’t get from me is some lunatic at the top of the Labour Party.’ This was his message when he spoke in Hammersmith.

The essence of the current situation is that as part of the world crisis British capitalism is on the rocks. The big bourgeoisie and the bankers see membership of the EU as a matter of life or death, while the masses more and more see capitalism and the bankers as their main enemy driving them back to pre-1945. These are the two irreconcilable opposites in the current situation.|

The rise of Corbyn is the immediate reaction of the working class to this situation.

UNION LEADER Ronnie Draper was sensationally suspended from Labour yesterday — but party bosses have refused to kick out supermarket magnate Lord Sainsbury for giving millions to the Lib Dems.

The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) general secretary received an email yesterday telling him he would not be allowed to vote in the leadership election because of unspecified comments he had made on Twitter.

Mr Draper’s suspension also means he cannot attend party conference or constituency meetings. He said he was “disgusted and in shock” at the news.

Senior party figures were meeting to discuss Mr Draper’s suspension as the Star went to press last night, amid a slew of disciplinary cases affecting people across the party.

But in a Taste the Difference moment, a party spokesman told the Star that no action was being taken against Labour life peer Lord Sainsbury of Turville.

New donations figures from the Electoral Commission revealed he had given an enormous £2,125,000 to the Liberal Democrats.

The supermarket heir famously witheld his donations to Labour when Ed Miliband was elected in 2010 — instead funding pro-business faction Progress.

But between June and July he donated £2,150,000 to Labour and £65,000 to Progress in addition to paying the Lib Dems.

Supporting other parties normally results in “auto-exclusion” from Labour, and many new party members have been kicked out for tweeting in support of alternative candidates prior to signing up.

A Labour spokesman told the Star that the peer faced no action, and offered only a statement from Lord Sainsbury himself.

From p1: The peer and former Blair government science minister said: “During the last two years I have helped put together the Stronger In Europe Campaign, and have provided them with funds.

“I have also made donations to the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats and a number of other registered bodies.

“I did so because I believe strongly that coming out of Europe will be damaging to our economy and society.”

Labour shadow chancellor John McDonnell hit out at the leaping Lord however, saying: “Labour party members will not accept what appears to be a rigged purge. I am writing to Labour general secretary Iain McNicol to demand that members and supporters who are suspended or lose their voting rights are given clear information about why action has been taken and a timely opportunity to challenge the decision.”

And an inside source told the Star that a trade union rep on Labour’s national executive would be pursuing disciplinary action against Lord Sainsbury, who is currently on “leave of absence” from the Lords but remains listed as a Labour peer. It is also understood that an officer of the peer’s constituency party branch would be making the case for him to be formally reported to Labour’s national constitutional committee.

When the Star contacted the Lords opposition office, an official said: “There’s no whipping issue because he doesn’t attend the House of Lord’s anymore, so it’s just an issue of whether or not he’s still a party member, of which I have no idea.”

A Lib Dem spokesman said the party was “extremely grateful” for the beneficient baron’s support.

And Progress director Richard Angell said his organisation was “proud to be supported by Labour’s biggest donor.”

“Lord Sainsbury’s £4m ringfenced funding for Labour and the Liberal Democrats’ pro-EU campaigns is a level of commitment to be welcomed to staying in the strongest force for workers’ rights, consumer protections and environmental justice,” he added.
