On the eve of the California primary and six other contests, the Associated Press and NBC News shook up the Democratic race for the White House last night by announcing Hillary Clinton had reached the number of delegates needed to capture the nomination, beating challenger Bernie Sanders. Both news organizations reached that conclusion based on unofficial polls of unelected superdelegates. If the projections stand, Clinton would become the first woman to ever be the presidential candidate of a major political party in U.S. history.
Sanders criticized the move. “According to the Democratic National Committee, what they should not be doing is lumping pledged delegates, i.e. real delegates, with superdelegates, who may or may not change their mind, but who do not vote until July 25th,” Sanders said. We host a debate between Kevin de León, president pro-tempore of the California Senate, and Los Angeles city council member and former California state legislator Gil Cedillo, who has been campaigning with Bernie Sanders.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton claimed the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday night after winning four state primaries, in California, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota, giving her a majority of elected delegates for the Democratic National Convention.
Clinton won the two largest states to vote June 7: California, the most populous state, and New Jersey, the 11th largest. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders narrowly won the Montana primary, as well as winning the North Dakota caucuses.
The size of Clinton’s victory in California far exceeded the two percentage point margin shown in polls leading up to the vote. This suggested that the intensive media campaign declaring Clinton the presumptive nominee, launched 24 hours before the polls opened, may have had the desired effect of depressing the Sanders vote.
Clinton’s victories in South Dakota and New Mexico, and the close contest in Montana, also suggested a significant decline in the vote for Sanders, who had been expected to win all three states.
Clinton declared victory in the overall contest for the Democratic nomination in a speech delivered just before the polls closed in California. …
Clinton congratulated Sanders and his supporters on a “vigorous debate,” claiming to agree with the goals of raising incomes, reducing inequality and improving conditions for the poor and working people. But she went on to repeatedly extend an olive branch to Republicans and supporters of the candidates defeated by Donald Trump for the Republican nomination. …
In the most significant passage in her speech, Clinton declared, “This election is not, however, about the same old fights between Republicans and Democrats. This election is different. It really is about who we are as a nation.”
This is clearly to be the axis of the Clinton general election campaign: downplaying any critique of the right-wing Republican policies of budget austerity, tax cuts for the wealthy and militarism—which Clinton herself supports—in favor of an “anyone but Trump” scare campaign.

Trump Paid Off Attorney General To Drop Trump U Fraud Investigation

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi solicited political money from Donald Trump right before she was about to investigate Trump University. She dropped the investigation and is now endorsing Trump. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down.
“Florida’s Republican attorney general, Pam Bondi, personally asked Donald Trump for a campaign contribution before dropping out of a lawsuit charging Trump University with fraud, the New Civil Rights Movement reports.
Bondi asked for the contribution before publicly announcing she would join a New York state suit against Trump U. Four days later, she received a check from Trump’s foundation. Bondi subsequently announced she was no longer suing Trump, citing insufficient grounds to proceed.
The check was in the amount of $25,000, and the donation was in violation of rules governing political activities by charities.”*

Also Tuesday night, the political crisis in the Republican Party came to a head over Trump’s incessant and openly racist attacks on the federal judge hearing the civil suit brought against Trump University by former students who claim that the real estate training program was a scam run for Trump’s personal profit.
Trump has blamed legal setbacks, including adverse rulings by Judge Gonzalo Curiel, on the fact that the Indiana-born judge was of Mexican ancestry. “He’s a Mexican,” Trump said in one interview. “We’re building a wall between here and Mexico.”
The racist vilification of the judge has provoked criticism of the Republican nominee within his own party, culminating in back-to-back statements by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, disavowing his comments. On Tuesday, Republican Senator Mark Steven Kirk of Illinois publicly withdrew his support for the presidential nominee, citing the attacks on Judge Curiel.
Trump gave a televised speech Tuesday night, ostensibly to thank voters in the Republican primaries held that day, all of which he won in the absence of any remaining opponents. Its real purpose was damage control. Earlier in the day, the Trump campaign released a brief statement claiming that his statements on Judge Curiel had been “misconstrued.” …
He combined this indictment with a rant against immigrants, characterizing them as robbers and murderers. This echoed the infamous speech in which he announced his campaign a year ago, when he vilified Mexican immigrants as rapists and murderers. It sets the tone for an increasingly fascistic turn in the Republican Party.

When we began this campaign a little over a year ago we were considered to be a fringe campaign. But over the last year, I think that has changed just a little bit.
As of last night, we have won 22 state primaries and caucuses with more than 11 million votes.
What we understand, and what every one of us has always understood, is that real change never occurs from the top on down, always from the bottom on up.
That is the history of America. Our fight is to transform our country and to understand that we are in this together. That is what OUR movement is about.
The struggle continues. We are going to fight for every vote in Tuesday’s primary in Washington, DC, and then we will bring our political revolution to the Democratic convention in Philadelphia.

COMPLACENT Hillary Clinton said yesterday that the contest between her and socialist Bernie Sanders for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination was over.
But her opponent was determined to fight on, with last night’s primary in California in his sights.
Establishment candidate Ms Clinton dismissed the California contest as irrelevant, declaring that she “will be the nominee for my party” and that she could not see any other possible result at the Democratic convention in July.
“I think it’s a little insulting to the people of California — the largest state,” Mr Sanders responded.
“She is not prepared to have a discussion with me about how she is going to help California address the major crises we face,” he told a huge cheering crowd in San Francisco.
His supporters chanted: “She’s scared. She’s scared.”
Apart from California, which provides 546 delegates to the convention, there were primaries last night in Montana (27 delegates), New Jersey (142), New Mexico (43), North Dakota (23) and South Dakota (25).
Although Mr Sanders has just 291 fewer elected delegates than Ms Clinton, she has benefited from pledged backing by “superdelegates” — various office-holders and other party grandees.
He still hopes to use his popularity in the contest to convince superdelegates to change their allegiance, especially since many of them plumped for Ms Clinton before Mr Sanders even launched his campaign.
A new poll for the Los Angeles Times indicates that 44 per cent of California Democrats support Mr Sanders, while 43 per cent back Ms Clinton.
“If there’s a large voter turnout, we will win. If there is a very large voter turnout, we will win with a big margin,” Mr Sanders said.
He suggested that victory in California would give him “enormous momentum” in his bid to push the Democratic contest to a convention fight.
His many rallies, largely in low-income neighbourhoods, have attracted tens of thousands, while Ms Clinton’s expensive fundraisers have been disrupted by protesters, especially in Hispanic areas.

US Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders vowed to fight on yesterday after Establishment favourite Hillary Clinton declared herself the party’s candidate.
Former secretary of state Ms Clinton was declared the victor of four of Tuesday’s six primaries, including the crucial California contest.
But those wins came after party officials had prematurely declared her the winner in an apparent bid to demoralise Mr Sanders’s supporters.
President Barack Obama called the leftwinger to thank him for “energising” voters and said they would meet today.
Republican candidate Donald Trump lambasted Ms Clinton during a rally at one of his golf courses in New York, branding her the defender of a “rigged” political system.
“The Clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an art form for themselves,” he said.
“They’ve made hundreds of millions of dollars selling access, selling favours, selling government contracts, and I mean hundreds of millions of dollars.”
