Leveson: Phone hacking ‘routine’ at The Sun
19 December 2011
The brother of former reporter Sean Hoare says he was told phone hacking “was taken” to the now defunct News of the World from its News International stablemate The Sun.
From daily The Morning Star in Britain:
Judge clears way for NotW victims to sue Sun as well
Friday 29th April 2016
A HIGH Court judge the go-ahead for victims of phone-hacking to pursue damages claims against The Sun yesterday.
News Group Newspapers (NGN), which has previously settled a large number of cases brought against the now-defunct News of the World (NotW), has always denied that hacking also occurred at the Sun.
But Mr Justice Mann has allowed the claims to proceed, saying four claimants could amend their cases to include the daily newspaper for the first time.
Two of those claims are among a number scheduled for a trial in July.
Up to 50 new claims against NGN, many of which will now include allegations of hacking at The Sun, are soon to be issued.
…
NGN is a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s News UK.
A NEW statutory inquiry into relations between the media and police, known as Leveson part two, was rejected by MPs today by just nine votes. Labour former leader Ed Miliband led moves to amend the Data Protection Bill to establish a statutory inquiry dubbed Leveson 2, but this was defeated by 304 votes to 295, with the majority of nine. Mr Miliband tweeted: “Very disappointed for the victims of phone-hacking and press abuse that we did not win the vote for Leveson 2: here.
