Dutch government restricts trophy hunting

Hunters are further restricted from bringing their trophies to the Netherlands. The government extends the ban with a large number of species, among them the white rhino, elephant, cheetah, hippo, polar bear and lion. In total, there are 200 species on the list.

The issue of trophy hunting became topical last year when an American [cosmetic] dentist shot dead Zimbabwe’s popular lion Cecil and placed a photograph of the dead animal on the Internet. Internationally people reacted with outrage and calls to ban the so-called trophy hunting swelled. …

A total of 27 applications were made [in the Netherlands] between 2012 and 2015 to bring a trophy to the Netherlands. They were lions, bears, elephants, panthers, goats, monkeys, wolves and lynxes. Seventeen applications were rejected, the ministry reported.
