Did Bernie Sanders Predict the Panama Papers When He Opposed Clinton-Backed U.S.-Panama Trade Deal?

The Panama Papers leak, that reveals how the rich and powerful rely on a secretive law firm to hide their wealth in tax havens, has drawn attention to a 2011 speech by Senator Bernie Sanders against the Panama-United States Trade Promotion Agreement, which became law in 2012. He noted that Panama’s entire economic output at the time was so low that the pact seemed unlikely to benefit American workers. The real reason for the agreement, Sanders argued, is that “Panama is a world leader when it comes to allowing wealthy Americans and large corporations to evade taxes.” Sanders said the trade agreement “will make this bad situation much worse.”
We get reaction from Michael Hudson, senior editor at the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which published the Panama Papers, and Frederik Obermaier, investigative reporter at Germany’s leading newspaper, the Munich-based Süddeutsche Zeitung. He is co-author of the book “Panama Papers: The Story of a Worldwide Revelation.”

Desperate Tory tries to defend tax avoiding
A TORY MP desperately attempted yesterday to defend the government over its inaction on tax havens by saying that it should be “encouraging” offshore banking in British overseas territories.
Dominic Grieve claimed that cracking down on tax avoiders would hurt the “livelihoods” of the small number of people employed in the tax-free countries as corporations and wealthy individuals would take untaxed businesses elsewhere.
However, he neglected to mention the effects of lower tax revenue on British public-sector workers when speaking on Radio 4’s Today show.
The astonishing claim comes after 11 million documents leaked from a Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca exposed what shadow chancellor John McDonnell called a “repulsive” global culture of tax dodging by the rich and powerful.
Instead, the former attorney general focused on protecting the “livelihoods of inhabitants” of places such as the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Jersey, Panama, Bermuda and the Bahamas.
He said: “If we’re going to destroy the economy of the British Virgin islands, which is because we prevent them from providing banking services at all, then we’re going to destroy the livelihood of its inhabitants.
“So, for those reasons I think the government has a responsibility towards encouraging overseas territories to find legitimate ways of economic development, and the financial sector is undoubtedly such a legitimate method.”
Bob Hudson, professor in the Centre for Public Policy and Health at Durham University, said that there were 600,000 companies registered in BVI but only 28,000 people live on the islands.
The Public and Commercial Services union said Mr Grieve’s claim that the government should encourage tax dodging is more than “morally reprehensible” and is “scaremongering of the worst kind.”
A spokesman told the Star: “We’re talking about wealthy individuals and organisations avoiding tax that funds all our public services.
“An apparent lack of money in this country has led to tens of thousands of public-sector job cuts, pay freezes and cuts to benefits for unemployed, sick and disabled people.”
Mr Grieve also agreed with the excuse used by David Cameron — whose late father Ian Cameron was found on the lists — by saying the Tory PM’s untaxed inheritance was a “private matter.”
Mr Cameron — who is preparing to chair an international summit on tackling corruption next month, where tax havens are expected to be high on the agenda — partly inherited Blairmore Holdings Inc after it had not paid British tax for 30 years.
