  3. I represent Central Florida. When I first ran for the House back in 2006, my campaign website featured a map of Florida as it would look if the glaciers melted. Orlando, 50 miles from the sea, would be oceanfront property.

I care. I care a whole awful lot. But let me quote Dr. Seuss’s words: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.”

Carl Pope cares a whole awful lot. He served the Sierra Club in the position of Executive Director from 1992 until 2010. In 2004 he published a devastating indictment of the Bush administration’s environmental policies with Paul Rauber called Strategic Ignorance: Why the Bush Administration Is Recklessly Destroying a Century of Environmental Progress.

Today, he is joining other world renowned environmentalists like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Jane Kleeb in supporting our campaign for the U.S. Senate. Here’s what he had to say about us:

“Alan Grayson is the candidate in Florida’s Senate race who best possesses both the intellect and political courage effectively to end our fossil fuel dependency. If we want to give our grandchildren a planet that has not been ravaged by climate change, he’s our best hope.”

“Nearly every candidate Grayson faces seems oblivious to the Gulf oil spill, California’s methane leak, Michigan’s disastrous pipeline rupture, and the everyday environmental damage that our fossil fuel addiction inflicts. But Alan Grayson gets it. He’s the only candidate in this race we can trust to take up this generational fight in a serious way.”

Carl Pope is a true environmental champion and a personal hero of mine, so I’m deeply honored to have his support. Will you join him, by chipping in $20.16, or whatever you can afford, to our campaign today?

    Courage,

    Rep. Alan Grayson

STUDENT activists occupied Edinburgh University’s financial building yesterday, calling on the institution to take a stand against the fossil-fuel industry.

The occupation follows months of campaigning which has led the university to halve its investments in fossil fuels and last week made a commitment to end investments with companies involved directly in arms manufacture.

But a spokeswoman for the University of Edinburgh’s Ethical Investment Campaign said that the university could help end “the influence held by companies which profit off the back of war and climate change” by publicly committing itself to cancel its investments.

Activists say they will only end the occupation when the university makes a public commitment to never invest in any companies taking over a 5 per cent profit from fossil-fuel extraction and arms manufacture and to withdraw its remaining £2 million investments in oil and gas.
