THE TRIAL of two leading Turkish journalists resumed yesterday as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan carried on his media crackdown overseas.

Cumhuriyet newspaper editor-in-chief Can Dundar and Ankara correspondent Erdem Gul face life imprisonment for reporting on government arms-smuggling to Syrian terrorists.

“The ones who should be on trial are not us,” Mr Dundar said before the start of the hearing.

The pair have also been accused of aiding the Hizmet movement led by US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, a former ally of Mr Erdogan.

On Thursday, Mr Erdogan told reporters in Washington that he welcomed criticism but would not tolerate insults.

But security guards at the Bookings Institute had to intervene when the Turkish president’s bodyguards tried to bundle journalist Adem Yavuz Arslan, who has worked for Hizmet-linked media, out of the press conference.

Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told Russian media that attacking Turkish-funded terrorists in his country “leads to Erdogan’s direct defeat.”
