As Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has catapulted the issue of fascism into the mainstream U.S. political realm, we turn to best-selling author Adam Hochschild, who has just written a remarkable, sweeping history of the Spanish Civil War.
The book is called “Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939.” It tells the story of how the Spanish Civil War captivated the world with volunteers flooding to Spain to bolster the democratic government’s efforts to stave off a fascist uprising led by Francisco Franco and aided by Hitler and Mussolini.
Some 2,800 Americans went to Spain as volunteers in the fight against fascism, and nearly a quarter of them perished there. The Americans were known as the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. After two-and-a-half years of fighting, the fascists were able to declare victory on April 1, 1939. World War II began shortly afterward. Adam Hochschild is the author of eight books, including “King Leopold’s Ghost,” “To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918” and now “Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939.”

Fueling Fascism: The Secret History of How Texaco Supplied Oil to Fascists in Spain

While thousands of Americans fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War, some chose to back Franco’s fascist regime. The most notable was the CEO of the American oil giant Texaco. He violated U.S. law by selling Franco’s regime discounted oil on credit. Also in violation of U.S. law, the oil was transported to Spain on U.S. ships.

ANTI-FASCISTS and trade unionists came together in Glasgow on Saturday to commemorate the International Brigades with speeches and music before laying wreaths.
Vera Dehle Thaelmann, granddaughter of renowned German communist and anti-fascist leader Ernst Thaelmann, led the tribute at the La Pasionaria statue, saying the German-speaking brigade members had named their battalion after Thaelmann because of his “unwavering courage” in the face of nazi persecution and imprisonment during the Spanish civil war brought the brigaders close to him.
She said the nazis feared her grandfather due to his ability to “mobilise working-class communities against fascism.”
Even though the nazis kept him in solitary confinement for 11 years, she said they “couldn’t break him” and “he is in our hearts and in our actions” to struggle for a better world.
Ms Thaelmann said the struggle that the International Brigades led against fascism 80 years ago is just as relevant today, highlighting the anti-refugee policies of many EU states and warning that fascism and racism feed off desperation in times of austerity.
She called for unity against the far-right to honour the legacy of the International Brigades in their struggle against fascism.

MORE than 100 British trade unionists and supporters of the International Brigade Memorial Trust (IBMT) marked the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Jarama in Madrid at the weekend.
They toured the battlefield, where over 120 members of the British Battalion were killed in February 1937 resisting Francisco Franco’s bid to encircle the city.
Along with members of the CCOO union federation they also commemorated the 40th anniversary of the murder of five left-wing lawyers in Madrid’s Atocha Street.
They were killed by fascists seeking to thwart moves towards the restoration of democracy after Franco’s death two years earlier.
IBMT secretary Jim Jump noted that clandestine trade union activity had led the resistance to Franco during the years of dictatorship in Spain.
“The Battle of Jarama showed that fascism could be checked on the battlefield,” he said.
“Your underground resistance to fascism, which underlined the illegitimacy of the Franco regime, was also an inspiration to people around the world.”
