POPE Francis declared Mother Teresa a saint yesterday, completing a fast-tracked canonisation as the highlight of his “Holy Year of Mercy.”
“Let us carry her smile in our hearts and give it to those whom we meet along our journey, especially those who suffer,” the pontiff said in his homily.
Born Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhui in what is now Macedonia, she devoted her life to the service of the poor, receiving the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize
However, she described abortion as “the great destroyer of peace” as she accepted the award.
An ardent Catholic, she tried to ensure the dying poor in her care were secretly baptised regardless of their religion to ensure a “ticket to heaven” and many claim that the charitable donations made to her hostels were more often funnelled to missionary work.
The miracle confirmed for her beatification occurred when Bengali woman Monica Besra was cured of a supposedly cancerous tumour by a ray of light from a picture of Mother Teresa.
The woman’s doctor says she was cured of a non-cancerous cyst in her stomach by the medicine that she took to treat it.
