Aylan Kurdi: the life and death of a three-year-old boy
3 September 2015
Three-year-old Aylan Kurdi, his five-year-old brother Galip and mother Rhian died when their dinghy – trying to cross from Turkey to Greece – capsized.
From daily The Morning Star in Britain:
Father of drowned Aylan calls for open doors
Thursday 24th December 2015
THE father of drowned Syrian toddler Aylan Kurdi has pleaded with the world to “open its doors” to refugees.
Heartbreaking photos of the three-year-old’s body washed up on a Turkish beach jolted nations into some action over refugees fleeing the Syrian civil war.
Abdullah Kurdi, whose wife Rehanna and five-year-old son Ghalib also drowned in September, will make an appeal for Syrian people in his alternative Channel 4 message on Christmas Day.
More than four million people have fled Syria since the start of the war. More than 250,000 have died.
Mr Kurdi said: “If a person shuts a door in someone’s face, this is very difficult. When a door is opened, they no longer feel humiliated.
“At this time of year I would like to ask you all to think about the pain of fathers, mothers and children who are seeking peace and security.”
He now lives in Iraq but returned to Syria to bury his sons beside their mother.
