British street artist Banksy has made a mural about Steve Jobs in the refugee camp in Calais. The deceased founder of Apple, himself the son of a Syrian immigrant, is pictured with a bag on his back and an old Macintosh computer in his right hand.

With this mural Banksy wants to make a statement. “We’re often led to believe migration is a drain on the country’s resources but Steve Jobs was the son of a Syrian migrant“, the BBC quoted from his statement. “Apple is the world’s most profitable company, it pays over $7bn (£4.6bn) a year in taxes – and it only exists because they allowed in a young man from Homs.”

In the ‘jungle’ in the French port city live thousands of refugees who want to cross over to Britain.

AGONISING pain is preventing numbers of refugees and migrants in Calais suffering severe dental problems from eating properly, a British team of dentists said yesterday.

The charity team said people were arriving at the camp dubbed “the jungle” every day with abscesses, rotting teeth, painful gums and infections.

Mohammed Khaliff, 16, from Syria, said he cannot chew food without strong painkillers as a police officer in his homeland had smashed his teeth with a steel bar.

The state of his teeth had worsened because of lack of running water in the camp, he said.

The dentists and other healthcare professionals have travelled to Calais to provide emergency dental care for people who have fled war, persecution and poverty.

Dentaid — based in Hampshire — said it is one of the “under-reported” problems among the 6,000 desperate people camped out in Calais.

Earlier this year, five dentists treated 150 people, including those who needed examinations, extractions and fillings, in just two days and handed out toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The charity’s overseas project manager Jacqueline James said: “Dental issues tend to come lower down on the list of people’s needs, but it is something that does affect people in a big way.

“People have been seen in extreme pain. They have been on the move for months and haven’t had access to a dentist or been able to clean their teeth very well.

“And generally they are coming from countries with poor dental care anyway. One guy who was treated had an abscess that had eaten into his cheek, but they were able to clean it out and give him antibiotics,” she said.

Pharmacist Kiran Ismail, who led the first emergency dentistry trip to Calais, said that his team used a caravan as a surgery and a marquee as a waiting area.

He said: “The conditions in the camp are very basic.

“There is a medical centre but no dentistry and we saw lots of people who were frustrated after being in pain for so long.

“It was an intense experience but everyone was incredibly thankful.”

Dentaid became aware of the urgent need for dentistry in the Calais camp after trustee Jonathan Gollings visited France in September.

The charity teamed up with the Manchester Refugee Crisis group and other volunteering dentists to provide the only dental services in the camp.
