U.S. Sells New Warships to Saudi Arabia Despite Warnings of War Crimes & Civilian Deaths in Yemen
21 October 2015
The Obama administration has approved an $11.25 billion deal to sell four advanced, Lockheed Martin-made warships to Saudi Arabia. The move comes as Amnesty International has called on the United States to halt arms transfers to Saudi Arabia or risk being complicit in war crimes in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia is waging a U.S.-backed campaign against Houthi rebels. We speak to Rep. Ted Lieu about his critique of U.S. policy in Yemen and Syria.

THE grandchildren of a British man facing 350 lashes for being caught with homemade wine in Saudi Arabia appealed directly to David Cameron yesterday.
Karl Andree, 75, who has battled cancer and suffers from asthma, was arrested in Jeddah last year for breaching strict anti-alcohol laws, for which he has spent a year in prison.
Three of his seven grandchildren — Lucy, 12, Celia, 10 and Edward, nine — have said Mr Cameron is Mr Andree’s “only hope.” More than 230,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the Tory PM to take action.
In a video message, Lucy and Celia said: “Even though you sent a letter to the Saudi Arabian government, he is still in jail two months after he should have been released.”
They added: “We still have no idea whether he is going to receive the 350 horrible lashes they threatened. No human deserves to be treated like this. He is really poorly, really old and we love him very much.”
