Ill ‘fit for work’ Londoner dies

This video from Wales says about itself:

Blind man Tony Harris told he is fit for work

3 January 2013

As the UK government continues to reform the welfare system, a 52-year-old man registered blind since he was 16 has been telling BBC Wales how he has lost benefits after being assessed as being fit for work.

With incapacity benefit being scrapped, Tony Harris attended a work capability assessment last September to see if he was eligible for its replacement, employment support allowance.

He says he was shocked to be told by letter in December that he was fit for work and not eligible for the allowance.

Mr Harris says he can barely see and can hardly use his hands due to rheumatoid arthritis.

He told BBC Wales political reporter Mark Hannaby he has lost £38 a week and is worried about going into debt and losing his home.

From daily The Morning Star in Britain:

Man dies weeks after being found fit to work by DWP

Thursday 8th October 2015

A SEVERELY ill man was found “fit for work” and had his benefits stripped weeks before he died.

Ricky Neacey, who had chronic liver failure, was forced to fight the decision to axe his jobseeker’s allowance.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) then made a U-turn, putting Mr Neacey on employment support allowance, for those too ill to work.

But the north-west Londoner died three weeks later, the Brent and Kilburn Times reported.

His brother Mark told the local newspaper: “It’s shameful that they treat a person — especially someone as sick, ailing and depressed as my brother — like this.”

To make matters worse, Brent Council stripped Mr Neacey of his housing benefit after learning of the DWP decision.

The council is now conducting a review into the support they offered him.

  1. Britain’s government well known for its policies of love, care and compassion bringing prosperity to all parts of the planet as example Aboriginals who once lived in the trees now reaping the benefit of the latest news on air strikes in Syria and the price of gold as a daily fare the fact that they have a legacy of malnutrition is only a paltry criticism of the fruits Britain having bestowed upon a race that is ungrateful having not caught up with the natural resources boom such as gold, the maimed and deformed are as Hitler having the right idea dealt with these people and Britain owes much to the Nazi regime.

  2. Sadly the DWP has no respect. Benefit reforms, supposedly to make sure everyone was getting what they were entitled to (and to catch out those fraudulently claiming)… yet instead blanketly stopping people’s entitlement… the lucky ones being those who managed to successfully appeal against the DWP’s decisions… often having to represent themselves in appeals because of the extraordinarily high level of people contacting CABs for advice and representation.
