Activists march to Manchester demo

Thursday 24th September 2015

ANTI-AUSTERITY campaigners in north-west England are to stage a four-day march to the October 4 protest at the Tory Party conference in Manchester.

Thirty-five activists will start the People’s March Against Austerity at Hoylake on Merseyside at noon on October 1.

Merseyside campaigners will be joined by a team from Tredegar in Wales who will march under the banner Save Our NHS.

The circuitous 60-mile route will take in rallies and speeches at major north-west towns on the way, gathering an expected 5,000 campaigners by the time it arrives in Manchester city centre for October 4’s national demonstration.

The marchers will call for a claimants’ charter, a move backed by Unite, Unison, PCS, trades union councils and others, to protect benefits claimants, and 10,000 leaflets will be handed out urging unemployed people and other benefit claimants to join local branches of Unite Community, the non-workplace wing of Unite.
