Translated from the Dutch Sovon ornithologists:

The rise of the middle spotted woodpecker in Twente region [the east of Overijssel province] still continues. Ben Hulsebos, who again this spring coördinated dozens of volunteers counting for Sovon, reported 242 territories of middle spotted woodpeckers this spring; another record number. Especially in the eastern region many couples breed. Remarkably, they are now even in humid pieces of birch woodland along the edge of heathland.
This species only returned to the Netherlands in 1997, after a long absence.
