Worldwide victory against polio, except for Ukraine

This video from the USA says about itself:

The American Polio Epidemic— a complete overview in minutes

17 June 2012

The Polio Epidemic wreaked havoc on America from 1916 until 1955, when a vaccine finally came out. In an era of advancing technology and increased understandings of health, this epidemic seemed to have come out of nowhere–and still today, no one is certain how it was being spread–striking innocent children, leaving them not dead, but crippled for life, a cruel reminder of the Polio attack. Then as suddenly as it had started, the disease receded for the winter months…and came back when summer rolled over. A survey showed, during the dark years of the epidemic, the only thing feared more than Polio, was a nuclear winter.

Translated from NOS TV in the Netherlands:

Ukrainian children paralyzed by polio

In southwestern Ukraine this summer two children became paralyzed by polio, says the World Health Organization. It is the first outbreak in Europe since 2010.

The children, 10 months and 4 years old, live in a region that borders Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland. The chances of the disease spreading in Ukraine are high, warns the WHO, but they say it would be unlikely that the disease would spread to neighbouring countries.

Disease eradicated

The outbreak could occur, according to the WHO, because there is too little vaccination in Ukraine. In 2014 only half of the children were fully vaccinated against polio and other diseases.

In July it was announced that polio is about to be eradicated worldwide. The virus can cause irreversible paralysis within a few hours. Because especially children are affected, the disease is also known as infantile paralysis. There exists a vaccine against polio, but there is no cure for the disease.

In Ukraine today, there apparently is money to indoctrinate children with neo-nazi ideology … but no money to inoculate them against the crippling disease polio.

In Ukraine today, it seems that the money goes to bloody war, to the billionaire oligarchs and to useless expensive foreign advisers like Tony Blair, rather than to healthcare for Ukrainian people.

Kudos to the doctors and others who scored important anti-polio victories. Everywhere in the world, it seems, except in Ukraine. In many countries in Asia, Africa and South America, there are traditionally many poor people who often cannot afford health care. Yet, it seems that even in these poor countries the situation is better now than in Ukraine. And than in Afghanistan, ‘liberated’ by George W Bush in 2001, also now one of few countries where there still is polio.

  7. UKRAINE’S communists accused the Health Ministry today of wasting time trying to force doctors to learn English while ignoring a measles epidemic.

Ukraine’s health service was handed to US-born and raised private health businesswoman Ulana Suprun in 2016 and Ms Suprun, nicknamed “Dr Death” by the Communist Party, has sought to introduce competition and market elements to the service.

She has rubbished established diagnostic practices in the country as “Soviet,” importing a set of 100 diagnostic protocols from Finnish medical society Duodecim which were then posted, in English, on the Health Ministry site with instructions for doctors to follow them.

The ministry has now issued a circular advising doctors to improve their “medical and colloquial English” by watching US serials including House, Grey’s Anatomy and Nurse Jackie, adding that doing so will “deepen their knowledge of various medical techniques.”

The Communist Party of Ukraine said Ms Suprun was merely “perplexing” doctors in the face of a measles epidemic that has infected nearly 30,000 Ukrainians this year and killed 13, including nine children.
