Mumia Abu-Jamal on the Meaning of Ferguson

Thursday, 13 August 2015 00:00

In a new collection of over 100 previously unpublished essays, many written in solitary confinement, Mumia Abu-Jamal addresses topics ranging from Rosa Parks to Edward Snowden, from the Trail of Tears to Ferguson. Click here to order Writing on the Wall today!

The following excerpt from Writing on the Wall was written on August 31, 2014, by Mumia Abu-Jamal. He spent more than 30 years awaiting execution, before his death sentence – but not his conviction – was vacated in 2011. Abu-Jamal is currently incarcerated and infirm in Mahanoy prison in Pennsylvania. You can contribute online to pay for a legal suit to force the state of Pennsylvania to provide Abu-Jamal with appropriate medical treatment immediately.

Before recent days, who among us had ever heard of Ferguson, Missouri?

Because of what happened there, the brief but intense experience of state repression, its name will be transmitted by millions of Black mouths to millions of Black ears, and it will become a watchword for resistance, like Watts, like Newark, Harlem and Los Angeles.

But Ferguson wasn’t 60 years ago – it’s today.

And for young Blacks from Ferguson and beyond, it was a stark, vivid history lesson – and also a reality lesson.

When they dared protest the state’s street-murder of one of their own, the government responded with the tools and weapons of war. They assaulted them with gas. They attacked them as if Ferguson were Fallujah, in Iraq.

The police attacked them as if they were an occupying army from another country, for that, in fact, is what they were.

And these young folks learned viscerally, face to face, what the White Nation thought of them, their claimed constitutional rights, their so-called freedoms, and their lives. They learned the wages of Black protest. Repression, repression and more repression.

They also learned the limits of their so-called “leaders” who called for “peace” and “calm” while armed troops trained submachine guns and sniper rifles on unarmed men, women and children.

Russian revolutionary leader V.I. Lenin once said, “There are decades when nothing happens; there are weeks when decades happen.”

For the youth – excluded from the American economy by inferior, substandard education; targeted by the malevolence of the fake drug war and mass incarceration; stopped and frisked for Walking While Black – were given front-row seats to the national security state at Ferguson after a friend was murdered by police in their streets.

Ferguson is a wake-up call. A call to build social, radical, revolutionary movements for change.

  2. The Campaign
    To Bring Mumia Home

    Tues, Sept 8th, 2015
    Competent Medical Care, Not Transfer
Administer the Hepatitis C cure to Mumia &
the 10,000 PA Prisoners with the disease, NOW!

At the urging of Pam Africa, I visited Mumia yesterday, Sunday, September 6. Pam got word from inside that Mumia’s cell had been raided by prison authorities.

As you know, after a series of hospitalizations in March and April 2015, Mumia has remained in the prison infirmary. During this time, most of his property has remained in his old cell. According to Mumia, on Friday, September 4, officers rushed him out of his regularly-scheduled medical bath to inform him that all the belongings in his cell had been packed up and placed in storage. The handling of prison property in the absence of a prisoner is a violation of prison procedures. After signing the forms required when prisoner property is placed in storage, Mumia asked if he was about to be moved to a different facility, since the boxing up of a prisoner’s property usually precedes a transfer. An officer assured him that he would not be transferred; but this all seemed really strange to Mumia.

These developments follow the immediate aftermath of a medical lawsuit filed by Mumia charging the DOC with medical neglect. Coming at this moment, a prison transfer would not be in Mumia’s best interest as it would disrupt contact with his attorneys and isolate him from his family and supporters. In addition, a move would put Mumia’s at risk; it would further compromise his physical and mental health and interrupt his medical care. The only transfer acceptable would be safe transit to a professional facility that would guarantee the medical attention he needs for a cure of his “active” Hepatitis C condition, for which there is a cure.

As you know, Mumia has been in an acute health crisis for over 9 months, since January 2015. In March 2015, prison infirmary physicians allowed Mumia to fall into diabetic shock and come close to death.

Please urge the PA Department of Corrections (DOC) to act in Mumia’s best interests and refrain from transferring him. Please also urge the DOC to give Mumia, and the 10,000 PA Prisoners with Hepatitis C, the cure he needs.

Recently, Mumia has lost approximately 25lbs in two months. Although his spirits are high and his cognitive abilities have improved, he still sleeps all day and is suffering extreme lethargy, a bi-product of untreated, “active” Hepatitis C, a liver disease. The skin around his face is clearer than before and although his leg wounds have closed, they have left crater-like scars, which can erupt at any moment. The skin throughout his body remains jet-black, raw, extremely wrinkled, and rough, like elephant hide. Nails on his hands and feet are falling off and the palms of his hands are blackened. These conditions are also symptoms of his untreated, “active” Hepatitis C.

The denial of the Hepatitis C cure to Mumia –while his medical condition remains precarious and while his disfiguring skin condition continues to cause him unthinkable suffering –is cruel and unusual punishment, and torture through medical neglect.

Demand the Hepatitis C cure for Mumia
and for the 10,000 PA Prisoners with the disease, NOW!

“Prison is a second-by-second assault on the soul, a day-to-day degradation of the self, an oppressive steel and brick umbrella that transforms seconds into hours and hours into days.”

  4. Malfeasance and Deliberate Indifference at SCI-Mahanoy are Killing Mumia Abu-Jamal

We are concerned about Mumia’s deteriorating health, as has been witnessed in recent weeks by his visiting doctor, clergy, counselors, teachers, family and friends. Evidence of intensifying Hepatitis C symptoms and possible development of the diabetes that nearly killed him a year ago calls for immediate and appropriate treatment.
We, therefore, urge you to DEMAND:

Immediate provision to Mumia of anti-viral treatment to cure his Hepatitis C condition that is, as his doctor testified in court, the persistent cause of worsening skin disease, almost certain liver damage, now extreme weight-gain and hunger, and other diabetic-like conditions.
Immediate release of all recent blood test results to Mumia’s attorneys.
Vigilant monitoring of Mumia for signs of diabetes, especially of his blood sugar level, since a diabetes attack nearly killed Mumia last spring of 2015.

  5. SIGN Petition to Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf:

Hep C cure NOW for Mumia Abu-Jamal and 10,000 PA prisoners

SIGN the petition at (your signature will be printed out and brought to PA Gov Wolf along with all the other signed statements on Friday April 22 in Philadelphia – Text of the petition statement appears at the bottom of this email)

URGENT! Read separate announcement about making calls to PA officials demanding immediate health care for Mumia, at

We initiated a campaign in 2015 to get Mumia Abu-Jamal and 10,000 other prisoners in Pennsylvania access to the hep C virus cure they urgently need. We took the PA Department of Corrections to court last December where we were able to show that the DOC spent over $160,000 treating Abu-Jamal’s hep C symptoms, but is refusing to provide him with a life-affirming hep C protocol that provides a 95 percent effective cure. Denying the cure not only increases a patient’s suffering, but leads to higher financial expenses as the disease develops into cirrhosis, cancer of the liver and ultimately death.

The latest phase of our campaign is a petition to PA Gov. Tom Wolf asking him “to make the DOC’s hep C protocol a guide to treatment and eradication of HCV, not a manual for the denial of care.” The petition points out that “the PA DOC’s refusal to fully treat Abu-Jamal and other prisoners is a clear violation of the U.S. Constitution’s Eighth Amendment prohibiting cruel and unusual punishment.”

Please sign the petition online as soon as possible and no later than April 15. Please forward and share this email immediately to all your friends, co-workers and fellow activists who are concerned about health care and justice for all. We plan to print out and deliver all the petitions to Gov. Wolf on Friday, April 22, in Philadelphia — two days before Mumia’s 62nd birthday.

  9. Rally & March to Free Mumia
    Friday, July 7 @ 12 pm
    Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office
    in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

On May 30, the Philly DA’s office brushed off a judge’s order to release all records of former DA Ron Castille’s involvement in Mumia’s case.

It follows a landmark Supreme Court decision which ruled judges MUST remove themselves from any case they had a hand in prosecuting. There are 14 prisoners fighting similar appeals. Mumia is one of them.

Ron Castille was Assistant Philly DA during Mumia’s 1982 trial and the city’s DA when his office opposed Abu-Jamal’s appeals in 1988. When Mumia’s case reached the state’s highest court, his lawyers challenged now-Judge Castille to recuse himself but he refused.

Under court order, the Philly DA’s office released a paltry 50 pages of public record. The judge’s latest order gives the DA until July 7th to fully comply.

The people’s movement forced the government to take Mumia off death row. This fight could win his freedom!

Please call First Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Martin: 215-686-8000 with this message:

Hi. My name is ____________. I’m calling in regards to Judge Tucker’s ruling about discovery in Mumia Abu Jamal’s appellate cases. The DA’s office should release all his files, as well as those in the 13 other cases, immediately.
