Er, we had democracy until the EU came along.

Even before the European Union, there may have been democracy on paper in many countries which are now EU members; but, in practice, there was often monopoly capitalist oligarchy. Leading, eg, to World War I.

And now we have the EU a supra-national government of the oligarchs for the oligarchs and democracy is even further away.
