Hexavalent Chromium & Your Health
4 October 2012
Hexavalent chromium (chromium VI) is a toxic form of the element chromium. Hexavalent chromium compounds are man-made and widely used in many different industries.
Translated from NOS TV in the Netherlands:
Chromium-6 found in dust of former NATO workshop
Today, 11:42
In dust in two buildings of the former NATO workshop in Eygelshoven last April the dangerous chromium-6 was found. Also, there were heavy metals in the dust: cadmium, lead, mercury and uranium.
Hennis, Minister of Defence, has sent the results of the investigation to the Lower House.
Chromium-6, which is used in paint to make aircraft and vehicles stainless, can be carcinogenic. How big the risks are that the staff in Eygelshoven have inhaled hazardous substances should appear from air measurements in both buildings, which are not used at this time. …
Until April already more than 600 (ex-) employees had reported that they think they now have health problems caused by chromium-6. The most distressing cases will get a provisional compensation payout.
Tomorrow parliament will debate on the ongoing problems with the chromium-6 paint in the defense department.
Opposition party SP wants the department to stops as quickly as possible with the use of chromium-6, and D66 wants to use additional capacity in order to use the substance safely.
