Tristram Stuart: The global food waste scandal
17 September 2012
Western countries throw out nearly half of their food, not because it’s inedible — but because it doesn’t look appealing. Tristram Stuart delves into the shocking data of wasted food, calling for a more responsible use of global resources.
From daily The Morning Star in Britain:
Over 100,000 sign petition to stop food waste
Tuesday 26th May 2015
MORE than 100,000 people have urged David Cameron to force supermarkets to give wasted food to charity and offer a delivery service to the poor.
The petition, addressed to the Prime Minister, broke the 100,000 barrier yesterday — enough to trigger a debate in Parliament.
“Rather than wasting millions of pounds’ worth of food that is still usable, make supermarkets donate their leftover products that are still safe to eat to foodbanks,” petition founder Lizzie Swarf said.
She goes on to suggest encouraging better off customers to donate £2 towards a delivery service to “needy people in their area on the delivery run” to ensure essential groceries are delivered to someone in need.
The petition was inspired by a similar law in France where supermarkets are banned from binning leftover food — estimated to be worth £14 billion in the country.
Lizzie has been a friend of mine for years, and she has faced the worst side of poverty. I sent her a food parcel one Christmas because she is a truly wonderful person who would never ask for anything, and who would do the same for somebody else in dire need.
If anybody can help to make this world a fairer, kinder place, it’s our Lizzie 🙂
