Anti-cuts couple build Lego army for austerity fightback

TWO imaginative anti-austerity campaigners in Stockton-on-Tees have created their own portable “demonstration” out of children’s Lego.

Stockton couple Barbara Campbell and Steve Cooke’s model uses Lego miniature characters wielding tiny protest placards reading Save the NHS, People’s Assembly, Unite, Ucatt and Love Teesside Hate Racism.

The models are frequently displayed at political events.

For the People’s March for the NHS, Ms Campbell made a series of Revolting Rabbits soft toys, which were sold to raise funds for the march. They became among the most recognised symbols of the action.

“A protest by Teesside Construction Activists in Redcar inspired the idea and I created a Lego model as a tribute to the activists involved in that action,” she said.

“Then we thought it would be fun to help promote the People’s Assembly’s forthcoming End Austerity Now protests and meetings by making a similar model.”

Songwriter Mr Cooke has also performed at fundraising gigs for 999 Call for the NHS and numerous political rallies.

“As well as the national demonstration on June 20, for which we’ve organised a coach, Teesside People’s Assembly has a public meeting in Middlesbrough on May 26 where we’ll be reflecting on the lessons to be learned from the general election and discussing how to take forward the fight against the Tories’ austerity cuts and attacks on people’s rights,” he said.
