The War in Yemen: Destroyed buildings in Sanaa’s old city rebuilt

21 August 2018

The human toll of the war in Yemen is high… but people are also grieving the loss of their history. Ancient buildings that had stood for centuries have been reduced to rubble. Now a group of tradesmen has pledged to restore their heritage, using traditional skills. Melinda Nucifora reports on the progress of their efforts.

This photo shows residents of Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, today, on the ruins of a home destroyed by Saudi air force bombs.

Translated from NOS TV in the Netherlands today, which talked to journalist Judith Spiegel:

Terrified

Spiegel had contact with people in the capital Sanaa, the main target of the air strikes. “Last night the people did not believe that the Saudis would bomb, this morning the same people were completely terrified.”

She talked to a woman friend who lives in the city. “She said, we are waiting here with our whole family for death. That sounds dramatic, but that is how it feels there. If a bomb drops somewhere then you can hear that in the whole city.”

Also translated from NOS TV today:

In Sanaa today there was a big protest against the air strikes. According to [correspondent] Van Hoorn, many people feel panicked by the bombing. “There is hoarding there. People have no idea what they are about to suffer.”

  2. The Shi’ite rebels, known as Houthis, urged their supporters to protest in the streets of Sanaa yesterday afternoon.

TV stations affiliated to the rebels … showed the aftermath of the strikes yesterday morning in what appeared to be a residential area.

Al-Masirah TV quoted the Ministry of Health as saying that 18 civilians had been killed and 24 injured.

Yemen Today showed hundreds of residents congregating around flattened houses, some chanting: “Death to Al-Saud” against the kingdom’s royal family.

Civilians were seen sifting through the rubble, pulling out mattresses, bricks and shrapnel.
