Translated from NOS TV in the Netherlands:
German far-right chases mayor away
Today, 20:55
In eastern Germany, a mayor has resigned out of fear of the extreme right. Neo-Nazis have received permission from the government of the state of Saxony-Anhalt to demonstrate against the arrival of asylum seekers today at the private residence of the mayor of Tröglitz.
That was a reason for mayor Nierth Markus (CDU) to surrender his chain of office. “Not because he is afraid of the Nazis, but to protect his family,” said his wife. According to her, the family suffered all week from the worst abuses.
“Should I have exposed my children, who lately had to endure so much already, to armed agents in front of their children’s rooms while racist and hate-filled chants were heard?
Markus Nierth on Facebook
In a statement on Facebook Nierth confirms that he wanted to protect his children and he writes that he feels abandoned by the state government.
The main party in the Saxony-Anhalt state government is Mayor Nierth’s own party: the (conservative) Christian Democrats.
Tröglitz has 3,000 inhabitants. The asylum center would accommodate 50 people. In recent weeks, there were plenty demonstrations against it. Opponents of the village administration were supported by the neo-Nazi political party NPD. Nierth (CDU) favors the coming of the asylum center.
