The Last Farmer in Fukushima‘s Post-Nuclear Wasteland: VICE INTL (Japan)
12 February 2015
Two years since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant went into full meltdown, and the resulting 20km evacuation zone was enforced, one farmer still remains behind braving high levels of radiation and loneliness to tend to abandoned animals.
His name is Naoto Matsumura, and he is the last man standing in the ghost town of Tomioka. Another farmer’s, Kenji Hasegawa’s town of Iidate was also evacuated due to high levels of radiation, he sought refuge in temporary housing. Faced with a postnuclear world both these men share brutally honest views on the state of their lives, TEPCO, government inaction and some of the hardest situations they have had to face in the midst of overwhelming radioactivity.

What a brave man. would you believe I have seen fish in the supermarket labelled as coming from Japan, Fukishima???!!!!!
hard to believe they would label it as such and that people would actually buy fish from Fukishima.
People must have very very short memories.

Was that in an Australian supermarket? Were there any reactions to that?

No, we would have laws against that sort of thing.
It was in China. I could hardly believe my eyes.

It is unexpected for me too. As far as I know, there has been quite some critical coverage in Chinese media of the Fukushma disaster.

Yes there has been. Especially also around the time of the ‘anniversary’ of the Nanjing massacre. I guess ‘business’ sneaked in. Funnily enough, it was an an ‘expat’ shop that I saw it – along with the Chinese there was also English on the packet. Small writing way down below but I always check the packets – I guess a lot of people don’t bother.
