World’s biggest ship no longer has nazi criminal’s name

This video is about the arrival of the ship still called Pieter Schelte then, in Rotterdam harbour in the Netherlands, on 8 February 2015.

Translated from NOS TV in the Netherlands:

Ship not named after Waffen-SS officer any more

The largest ship in the world will be renamed. The Swiss-Dutch offshore company Allseas will after all waive the controversial name Pieter Schelte, which refers to the founder of the company, the war criminal Pieter Schelte Heerema.

Heerema, a passionate anti-Semite, was a member of the Waffen-SS and was convicted and imprisoned after the war. His son, Edward Heerema of Allseas, had named the mammoth ship after his father, but he will change that now after persistent criticism by, inter alia, the international transport workers union ITF.

Shell is also opposed the name. The oil company wanted to hire the Pieter Schelte to dismantle oil rigs in the North Sea, but they thought the name was inappropriate.

After lots of pressure had been applied on Shell. Eg, by trade union Unite in Britain. Unite petition against Shell working with Pieter Schelte: here.

Whatever name the ship will get now is not yet known.

Company forced to relent after naming ship after Nazi: here.
