From Wildlife Extra:
Hong Kong retailer removes ivory from shelves
Ivory products pulled from fourth major Hong Kong retailer, The Chinese Goods Centre (CGCL), meaning most of the city’s major retailers are now ivory-free.
The ban by the store in North Point followed similar measures implemented by the stores Wing On, Yue Hwa and Chinese Arts & Crafts last year.
The 52-year-old department store said it had told its tenant supplier in late November to stop selling products made of ivory items listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
“We are aware that a business … should not only be about profit, it should also take on its social and environmental and conservation responsibility,” CGCL director Wong Chow Kuen-kuen wrote in a letter to pro-Beijing lawmaker Elizabeth Quat.
The letter was a reply to Elizabeth’s repeated demands from her for the store to halt ivory product sales. She called the move a “good sign”, but that “There must be a sales ban because the system to regulate licensed ivory traders does not work. Legal and illegal ivory stocks can be sold together and the government cannot monitor any of this.”
HONG KONG TO PHASE OUT IVORY SALES “Hong Kong, said to be the world’s largest retail market for ivory, announced that it would be phasing out the sale of legal ivory in the city.” [Reuters]
Reblogged this on Marilyn Munrow and commented:
I hope this leads to a total ban on sales of all these poor animal products which do not need to be slain for profit.
