FNV: already hundreds of dead in World Cup construction in Qatar

Saturday Nov 8 2014, 10:35

In the construction of infrastructure and stadiums for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 there is still a lot wrong. There are many hundreds of deaths and Asian construction workers are treated like slaves, says FNV Bouw [the Dutch construction workers’ trade union] after inspections.

The authorities in Qatar do not count deaths, but according to FNV Bouw embassies report that there were 900 deaths in two years. The cause is often said to be exhaustion.

Many migrants live in appalling conditions, says the union. Sometimes they cannot leave because they had to incur liabilities to arrive in Qatar or because their passports have been taken away.

Human rights group Amnesty International accused 2022 World Cup host Qatar yesterday of dragging its feet over addressing concerns about the abuse of migrant workers: here.
