EU sues the Netherlands because of animal testing

Thursday Oct 16, 2014, 12:43 (Update: 16-10-14, 14:13)

The European Commission is suing the Netherlands because The Hague is delaying the introduction of European rules which should reduce the use of animals in testing. The rules are also intended to improve the lives of test animals.

Two years ago, Europe has adopted new rules for the housing and care of laboratory animals. In the Netherlands these new standards have still not been enacted, the commission says. Netherlands promised the EU last year to quickly implement the new legislation. But in the Senate the new law has still not been approved.

The EU wants now enforce this now and asks the European Court of Justice to impose on the Netherlands a fine of 51,156 euros per day.

Endangered species

The Netherlands is still below standard on some points concerning the welfare of laboratory animals. The EU wants the Netherlands to further restrict the use of endangered species. And an organization for test animal welfare must be established. Also, the tests undergone by the animals and the purposes of them should be defined better.

Exceptionally, experiments on endangered species are done in our country. This is only allowed to do research on the species concerned, or if there are no other animals available for a test.
