Charity slams 300 fine for racist attack

A Scottish housing charity branded a £300 fine for a shocking racist attack earlier this year “derisory” yesterday.

“You have to ask if £300 is enough to deter racists from carrying out future attacks,” said Positive Action in Housing director Robina Qureshi.

“The courts need to look at all sentencing powers available to them, including prison.”

Stuart McIlreavy, of Linwood, Renfrewshire, was fined at Glasgow Sheriff Court for the city-centre tirade in February.

Video footage of the attack seen in court showed Mr McIlreavy screaming at two Asian men on a bus.

He can be heard shouting: “My brother just got blown up by an IED, ya p**** [pakis] — anything to do with you? Shut your f****** face. I’ll f****** stab you in the neck like a f****** chicken.”

The Hope Not Hate campaign joined calls for stronger sentencing in racist attacks.

“This individual subjected innocent people to a vile, racist tirade and then sought to justify his rant using lies about family members being injured in the armed forces,” a group spokesman said.
