Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership undermines democracy

What is the Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership?

2 July 2014

The Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership is a trade deal between the EU and the US – and is anything but harmless. The deal boosts corporate power and endangers people and the planet.

This video, made by international campaigning organisation Attac, sets out the problems with the deal in a really clear, informative way. More information here and here.

Big business cannot override democracy – Anderson

28 July, 2014 – by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said she will continue to oppose the controversial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) in the European Parliament.

Speaking as negotiations continue on the proposed agreement between the EU and the USA, Ms Anderson said:

“This proposed partnership has the potential to have a one of the biggest pieces of legislation ever to come before the European Parliament.

TTIP could see major US companies and their subsidiaries sue European governments for legislating in a way that reduces their ability to make profits.

“That is totally unacceptable as it would allow business interests to override democratically elected institutions.

“I and my Sinn Féin colleagues, Lynn Boylan Liadh Ní Riada and Matt Carthy, have already opposed TTIP in the European Parliament and will continue to do so.

“Opposition to this proposed partnership is growing with trade unions, environmental groups and anti-poverty organisations voicing serious concerns about the impact this could have on Europe.

“The discussions around TTIP need to reflect this impact, particularly on a government’s right to legislate for its own people.

“The debate needs to be open and transparent so people can learn the truth about TTIP.

“Those in favour of the legislation, including British prime minister David Cameron, have made claims about job which have been described by academics from across Europe as vastly overblown.

“The reality is that TTIP, far from solving unemployment problems, could actually lead to the loss of one million jobs in the EU and USA.”

  1. Watching that video made my blood boil! I have written songs about that situation “Sold Out” from the album Osaka Time is one. I even mention Chapter 11 in it.

  2. Such dangerous legislation that allows US firms more right to legislate than Governments within the EU based on not being able to curb their profits. There are occasions where we may need to rewrite legislation to ensure US firms pay the correct and fair taxes of the country in which they trade, this crass legislation protects the company and not the country. So very one sided. Lets not get drawn into their version of Capitalism.
