After 21 March in Costa Rica came, of course, 22 March. Still in Guanacaste province. One of the earliest birds that morning was this rufous-naped wren.
A wood stork flies past.
A rose-throated becard on a branch.
A great egret near the pond.
An eastern meadowlark on a pole.
A Baltimore oriole and a spot-breasted oriole together in a tree.
A white-tailed kite flying.
A ferrugineous pygmy-owl on a branch, calling. White-lored gnatcatchers try to drive it away.
A we walk back: a black-headed trogon.
A white-fronted parrot flying.
A boat-billed flycatcher on its nest in a tree.
An inca dove.
A groove-billed ani drinking from a fountain.
Barn swallows flying.
In a tree not far away, a blue grosbeak.

I don’t know a lot about birds, but there are several species that hang out in the trees around my house, and it’s always so comforting when I hear them chirping first thing when I wake up. They bring me hope, in a way.
