This is a photo of Poas volcano in Costa Rica. Taken on 15 March 2014; after our departure from Alajuela.
The photos on this blog post are smartphone photos.
Poas is an active volcano. You can see smoke. The temperature in the crater lake is about 40 degrees Celsius.
About birds around Poas volcano: stay tuned for another post on this blog.

Thank you, dear Natalie! There will be some more smartphone Costa Rica photos, but most will be with the ‘real’ camera.

These are great! I have traveled to Costa Rica before but didn’t see anything like this. Did you get the chance to really observe the detail of the surrounding rocks?

No, the immediate working crater is not accessible. The photos are taken from the old rim, hundreds of meters higher than that.

Those are real volcanic acids. Interesting.

Yes. A lagoon about a kilometer from the crater has no life in it.

When Iceland was a colony of Denmark, Icelanders used to say mouths of volcanoes were gates of hell. Standing at the rims, you could hear the hell denizens’ voices, they said. The voices they heard spoke Danish 🙂
