Sperm whales stranded in Denmark

Two sperm whales have stranded in West Jutland this weekend. One was already dead, the other one is still alive, but will be impossible to save. It is still unclear why the whales stranded – but the theory is that they have been ill – or that they have not navigated properly. The two whales are about 14 meters long and are quite an attraction to the locals.

Meanwhile, the second whale has died as well. They were both young males.

See? Another one in Denmark!! I know stranding can’t be helped but … WTH? I wonder if they will go out of their way to help these animals?

Very sad, indeed! We don’t know yet whether these deep water whales just lost their way to shallow water; or whether, eg, pollution or miltary war games played a role in their beaching. We need more research.

        When many Sandwich terns in the Netherlands died decades ago, it turned out that the cause was a chemical dumped into the river Rhine by a corporation in Germany. Action stopped this dumping, and Sandwich tern numbers went up again. Something similar should happen now about the whales.
