October 2013. Leading animal welfare charity, Humane Society International UK, is appalled by news that an eight week extension to the Gloucestershire badger cull has been granted by Natural England. The charity warns that prolonging the shooting is the very worst thing the government can do because it increases the risk of spreading bovine TB as badgers flee the area: here.

I just cannot understand why people want to kill these creatures in the UK.

The British government claims that would help against bovine TB (disputed by scientists).
The same British government wanted a military attack on Syria as well (fortunately, stopped in parliament, at least for the moment, as only a small minority of people supported the war plans). It is to be hoped that the anti-badger killing movement in Britain will prevail.
