Some how the rich use their money often on acts of folly, Whether Rothschild, gave over his collection to the state and the taxpayer become the bearers of maintenance is questionable, I suppose the rich in this case super rich require monuments of the legacy left, in name, although even the name become just another name, is the most likely impetus, at the time of the gift must have been a talking piece at the dinner table.
