Invasive American minks may threaten the largest woodpecker species in South America, according to new research. The Magellanic woodpecker — a relative of the extinct ivory-billed woodpecker — lives throughout the Andes of Chile and Argentina. The large birds only produce one offspring per year and maintain broad territorial boundaries of about 1 square kilometer (0.4 square miles) per male-female pair, limiting the density and growth of their population: here.

These have more RED than my local woodpeckers. SMILE. Very fun video. I wonder if they’re eating some bugs. This summer I had a Flicker woodpecker fill up on a ton of ants moving along our house sidewalk for hours. .Hi. Thanks.

Yes, the young woodpecker has red all over the top of its head. An adult male has red only on the back of his head, and on his belly. And an adult female has red on the belly only.

Beste Nico,
Sinds een paar dagen heb ik een bijzondere bezoekster in mijn tuin.
Eerst was schuchter op de schutting, maar nu zit ze heel brutaal tussen
de mussen en meesjes aan de pinda’s te knabbelen en bijt ze aardig van
zich af.
Ze komt dagelijks op bezoek.
Voor mij toch wel bijzonder omdat ik op het Friese platteland woon en
dus niet in bosrijk gebied.
Ziet ze door de bomen het bos niet meer of is het normaal dat ze in
mijn omgeving in tuinen foerageert?
Bijgesloten wat foto’s en mijn woongebied (8614AM). Ik hoop dat het
formaat van de foto’s groot genoeg is.
