Lindsey German from Stop the War Coalition interviewed on BBC News 28.08.13 makes the case that military intervention by the western powers in the middle east has brought nothing but catastrophe to the region. Instead of threatening to attack and pouring arms into the country, America and Britain should stop blocking attempts to find a political solution to the Syrian civil war.

TY for this post, Kitty!!! It is precisely how I feel about this issue. Seems to be the US is always in a hurry. Just this AM, read briefly something that McCain said …. “a limited action won’t be enough to solve this problem” … what does he mean?? Boots on the ground?
Syria is smack in the middle of the region … this could be disastrous. Why don’t they get it??

You are right. You hear talk from the US administration about a limited military action. However, limited military actions have a tendency to start a bit bigger military actions, which start even bigger military actions … The Vietnam war for the USA started with a few “military advisers” until over half a million soldiers were in Vietnam.
The first world war, with its millions of dead, started with killing one prince in Sarajevo. Then, the Austrian empire retaliated with what they thought would be a small war of revenge on Serbia … which escalated into a world war.
John McCain was a personal buddy of Gadaffi in Libya, until he started beating the drum for war on Libya, which led to assasination of Gadaffi.

How can this continue? Don’t we ever learn … as humans? War isn’t the answer.
As we have access to more technology and germ warfare (whatever) it gets worse. The consequences are worse.
Greed, power, lack of love for humanity is going to do us all in!! We, as individuals with common sense have to stop it.
I guess that one of the ways is blogging and pointing these things out hoping that there are some out there that pick these things up …..
Did you see the video Glenn Beck’s TV show? Did you read about this being a possible accident caused by the rebels themselves?
There’s no clear answer ….. and militarism and force isn’t it!!

Not only the Glenn Beck show, also many others keep open the possibility that this was not a Syrian government-ordered gas attack. Even British Prime Minister David Cameron, making the case for war (and losing that case) in parliament, admitted he had no 100% certainty. United States intelligence services say the same.

President Obama has called for a vote in Congress to authorize an attack on Syria. Congress is scheduled to return on Monday, Sept 9.
President Obama is using the same tactics as President Bush did before the Iraq War. When the UN Security Council would not support the U.S. war, Bush turned to the U.S. Congress for a war vote giving him “all necessary means”. Ten years later Iraq lay in ruins. A million Iraqis died, millions became refugees. More than 1.5 million US soldiers were deployed to Iraq. Today thousands of U.S. and NATO soldiers are disabled, traumatized and 1/3 will suffer from PTSD.
Just as in Iraq, Afghanistan and earlier in Vietnam this is again a U.S. war based on lies. Bombing Syria is NOT a ‘humanitarian intervention’. It is another war for Wall Street Profit! This time there is a risk of global confrontation or even world war.
This war will only serve the billionaires and militarists who profit from war and conquest. The workers and poor will pay, in Syria and here in the U.S.
Raytheon stocks and profits are soaring. Our cities are crumbling! We need funds for job programs, healthcare and education, NOT billions wasted on war and destruction. The cost of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan exceeds $4 trillion dollars.
The reaction of the overwhelming majority of people is, “We don’t want this war!” But we have to join together to mobilize this majority and show the world we are ready to fight to stop this war.
Let’s join together with one powerful message: Hands Off Syria! Not Another War!

My faith in the US Congress is very shaky. They haven’t done a thing in the last 8yrs. since Obama was elected. Anything that he proposes is blocked …. so maybe, another blogger mentioned this, this is his most brilliant move … let Congress decide.
I just wonder … and don’t like this feeling of the possibilities of any military action involving the US. It has never proven efficient except for being a powerful killing machine of US soldiers, civilians and humans … without any good outcome.
I worked with US veterans for more than 27 years … I know what happens afterwards first hand ….. they do not come back home in any good shape. Then the system screws them and for what ……. ????
