This video is the trailer of the new Dutch wildlife film De Nieuwe Wildernis (The New Wilderness).
Its subject is Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve in Flevoland province.
On 26 September, this film will be in the movie theaters.

Just incredible ridiculous to speak about Wilderness in the Netherlands, one of the most urbanised nations in the World. The trailer showed the most common species in Sweden. And horses, they are all domesticated,the only wild horse is extinct in the wild and is reintroduced in the Gobi desert.

The title is “New” Wilderness, which does not need to be the same in the Netherlands as in Sweden, in the Amazon, or elsewhere. Trailers give only a very short summary, so I will wait till I see the complete film.
The horses in Oostvaardersplassen are konik horses, originally from Poland; said to be closest to wild horses.

Had a guy just seeing Great Egrets north of Stockholm , the other day in Hjälstaviken. We have both bears and wolves about 50 km from Downtown Stockholm.Your only wolf died in a car accident/ road kill.
You are just making a fool of yourself comparing Scandinavian Wilderness with Urban Netherlands.
Re horses, all horses with a black stripe on the back are closely related to the wild horse.
I recall the Swedish plant hundkäx, that you said was very rare in the Netherlands , is growing as fast as weed in Sweden.
We have areas with thousands of thousands kilometres with real wilderness and only a population of 10 million people.

Yes, but as fas i know, great egrets don’t nest in Sweden, while hundreds nest in the Netherlands, largely in Oostvaardersplassen. Also other more southern birds, like black-winged stilts and bee-eaters, may nest in the Netherlands, but not in Sweden. Also for more southern plants etc.
I do not equal the Netherlands with Sweden in this at all. Every fauna has its own characteristics, determined not only by urbanisation, but also by climate etc.

According to Birdlife Sweden all Great Egrets visiting Sweden are in breeding plumage and Great Egrets do nest in Sweden!
When there’s the International Birdwatch in Europe , Sweden has always most species in Europé.

I read there’s a public outcry re the animal Welfare at the site. Horses without shelter and vets etc. And the ” reserve” is man-made , hardly what you call ” Wilderness”.

“The Dutch public became vocal about animal welfare: OVP was designed to be hands-off – no veterinary services, no scheduled feedings, no ear tags. Harsh winters sometimes left several thousand large mammals without sufficient food or shelter. They are treated as “wild” and some have died of disease or starvation (about 10-20% of the herds per year). The public took up the case with the government after seeing videos of weak and dying animals.
A stupid experiment, where large herbivoures and other animals have no access to do their annual migrations .

Animals dying of disease or starvation happen everywhere in nature. The outcry about this was, in large parts, fueled by the Dutch hunting lobby, which lobbied for the right of killing animals out of “mercy”, and who have powerful allies on the political level. Eg, the Dutch Party for Animals disagreed with that campaign.
It is true the animals should have more space for migration. This might be achieved by taking away the fences between Oostvaardersplassen and Hollandse Hout:

and by linking the Oostvaardersplassen to the nature reserves of the Veluwe region, creating corridors. There were/are provincial authority plans for that. However, the national government vetoed these plans in the name of the sacred doctrine of Thatcherite financial “austerity” (which they don’t apply to the royal family, to the war in Afghanistan, etc.).

The reserve is man-made with invasive species like horses and deers and cows. I agree with the hunters here and think animals should be shot by mercy.
The horses are not wild they are not adapted to living like real wild animals, all seem to be an enormous animal abuse by urbanites!
Poor, poor animals living without shelter, saw there was not an decent forest to hide out in and not being able to migrate for searching food! Disgusting!

Konik horses have a history of living for many generations in wild or semi-wild state in Poland; eg, in Bialowieza nature reserve. They came to the Oostvaardersplasen from that situation in Poland. And the “mercy” of the hunting lobby is rather hypocritical.

In the Oostvaardersplassen, there is some forest shelter, but there should be more. Thanks to, eg, the Dutch Party for the Animals, the winter situation improved recently. It should improve further by removing the fence with Hollandsehout, and linking Oostvaardersplassen to the big Veluwe nature reserves (mainly forest). In order for this to happen, governmental cuts in funding nature should be reversed.
The original purpose for the Oostvaardersplassen area was to make it an industrial estate. However, then it turned out that many animals, especially birds, which had almost become extinct in the Netherlands: grey lag geese, spoonbills, marsh harriers, hen harriers, Montagu’s harriers, kingfishers, bearded reedlings etc. thrived there. And used Oostvaardersplassen as a bridgehead to re-colonize other nature reserves. Later, the great egrets came. Still later, white-tailed eagles, which had been extinct for centuries in the Netherlands, started to nest there. And have recently expanded to other nests elsewhere in the Netherlands.
Dutch conservation organisations lobbied then for Oostvaardersplassen to become a nature reserve, not an industrial estate. For this, they had to oppose industrial interests lobbyists. However, in this case the powerful industrial interests did not lobby as hard as in some other cases, as it was far from clear whether businesses would like to go to an Oostvaardersplassen industrial estate. So, a victory for conservation. Now, there should be the improvements which I mentioned.

Wow, rarely read such negativity. You don’t seem to have any knowledge about nature and the Netherlands in particular. It seems that you think you must bring a kind of Swedish chauvinism into play, that’s pathetic. There’s no need to judge, please inform yourself better and just enjoy the film.
