Good news! I hope there is not some “snake in the grass”, meaning allegoric Monsanto “snake” (I like real grass snakes).

Monsanto gives up on Europe? Would be great – but rejoicing is premature: here.

Science on the Land

Monsanto‘s spokeswoman in Germany, Ursula Lüttmer-Ouazane, says that her company won’t keep trying to get licences for GM crops in Europe. Why? Because people don’t want GM (genetically modified, also called genetically engineered, GE) crops here. Ms Lüttmer-Ouazane says that ‘it’s counter-productive to tilt against windmills’.

In case you don’t know, ’tilting against windmills’ means wasting effort on fights you’ll never win. I feel a surge of nationalist pride! We are that windmill.

It’s a long time since we in Britain stopped fighting our German neighbours. We get on just fine now. So today, I invite my fellow Europeans to join me singing to the tune of the Dad’s Army theme ‘Who do you think you are kidding, Big Monsanto?’

Thanks for sharing. It looks like Monsanto is becoming the most reviled company in the world. I just read recently that 80 to more than 90 percent of the corn, soy and, I think, wheat crops in the US are produced using Monsanto’s GMO seeds. I can’t believe we are such idiots.

Yes, those are the stats I’ve seen too. I think it’s corn (aka maize) and soya, but not yet wheat. The GM crops which now dominate the corn and soya in N America are Roundup Ready (herbicide resistant) and Bt (insecticidal).

  Thanks for the info. I always knew Monsanto was a bad player, but only recently have found out how bad. Did you know their lead attorney’s name is “Snively?” He sounds like a character from a Harry Potter movie.

May they also close down the plants that we do not know about yet. We need to remain awake for name-changes, and MonSatan selling off parts of its business to other gen-tech companies.
