Wednesday 10 April 2013

KUWAIT: Information Minister Salman al-Sabah has defended a proposed law that would hit people who insult the royal family with fines of over £500,000.

It follows a crackdown on internet users, including prison sentences for Twitter users who insult the emir.

Mr Sabah claimed that the proposed rules would not stifle free expression.

From PTI news agency:

Kuwait City: Kuwait’s information minister is defending a proposed media law that reports say could bring fines of about USD 1 million for insulting the Gulf nation’s emir and other members of the ruling family.

The government has not given details of the draft regulations, which would cover both traditional media and online posts.

But the liberal Kuwait daily Qabas reported on Wednesday that the proposed codes also could include fines reaching about USD 700,000 for stirring internal tensions.

KUWAIT: Opposition groups said one of their leaders has been sentenced to five years in prison on charges of insulting the emir during a political rally last year.

The sentence passed against former parliament member Mussallam al-Barrack could rekindle street protests that flared during disputes over parliamentary elections in December.

Mr Barrack led a boycott movement to protest against changes in voting rules ordered by the emir.
