Former PC and ex-prison officer jailed for Sun links

A former police constable and a prison officer were jailed for selling information to the Sun newspaper today.
Former Surrey PC Alan Tierney and Richard Trunkfield, who worked at high-security Woodhill prison near Milton Keynes, were both sentenced at the Old Bailey.
Mr Tierney sold details of the separate arrests of footballer John Terry’s mother and Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, while Mr Trunkfield passed on details about one of James Bulger‘s killers, Jon Venables.
Both men admitted misconduct in public office earlier this month.
Mr Trunkfield has since resigned from Woodhill prison and Mr Venables is no longer being held there, the court heard.
Mr Trunkfield received 16 months, while Mr Tierney was jailed for 10 months.
Passing sentence on both men in separate hearings, Mr Justice Fulford said: “This country has long prided itself on the integrity of its public officials.
“Cynical acts of betrayal of that high standard have a profoundly corrosive effect.”

Yes. It is to be hoped that will not only happen in this case of a low ranking police constable, but also with high ranking police officers; and with high ranking Murdoch empire fat cats, including Rupert Murdoch himself.

THE Court of Appeal has overturned the conviction of a Sun reporter who gave police money for information.
The decision was welcomed by the leader of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) Michelle Stanistreet.
Crime reporter Anthony France was the only journalist successfully convicted following a police investigation into payments to public officials.
Mr France, 42, from Watford, Hertfordshire, was accused during his trial at the Old Bailey of cultivating a “corrupt relationship” with a police officer over four years.
He was given a jail sentence of 18 months, suspended for two years.
The Court of Appeal heard how payments for stories were advertised by the Sun, and authorised by managers.
Ms Stanistreet said: “The NUJ welcomes this decision. Anthony was treated appallingly by the Sun and Rupert Murdoch’s News UK, which was happy to shop its own staff and do a deal with the police to escape corporate liability.”
