Karzai Spokesman Calls NATO War ‘Unwise, Aimless’

A spokesman for the Afghan presidency has described the NATO-led military mission in the country as “aimless and unwise.”

“The people of Afghanistan ask NATO to define the purpose and aim of the so-called war on terror, as they question why after a decade, this war in their country has failed to achieve its stated goals,” Aimal Faizi said in a statement on March 19.

Faizi’s remarks followed claims by Afghan President Hamid Karzai that the United States is colluding with the Taliban to keep Afghanistan unstable and give foreign forces an excuse to stay beyond 2014.

  1. Afghan pull-out

DENMARK: The government said today that it will end combat operations in the Nato-led mission in Afghanistan in August, about six months earlier than planned.

Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said that around 350 Danish soldiers will be pulled out, leaving 300 to train Afghan forces. Denmark’s force is mainly situated in the volatile Helmand province under British command.

AFGHANISTAN: A member of the government-backed militia programme has shot and killed five of his colleagues.

The shooting happened on Thursday morning in a remote part of Badghis province’s Qadis district.

The attacker was a member of the Afghan local police, a programme in which the government in Kabul and its international allies train and fund villagers to mount defences against insurgents.
