Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez dead

6 March 2013

After 14 years in power as Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chavez, a former military officer and left nationalist, died in a military hospital in Caracas Tuesday afternoon following a two-year battle with cancer.

Chavez, who was 58, came to national prominence as the leader of an abortive military coup against the corrupt regime of Venezuelan President Carlos Andrés Pérez, the leader of Accion Democratica, a social democratic bourgeois party. Andrés Pérez was responsible for the bloody repression of the “Caracazo”—a popular uprising against IMF-dictated austerity measures in which up to 3,000 were killed.

Freed after two years of imprisonment, Chavez founded his “Bolivarian” movement and ran for president in 1998, claiming that he represented “neither the left nor the right,” but was committed to a program of social and economic reform and an end to the corrupt two-party system that had traded power over previous decades between Accion Democratica and the Christian Democratic Copei party.

After gaining power, he began espousing a left populist political platform, identifying himself as both a nationalist and “socialist.”

Chavez earned the implacable hostility of Washington with his populist and nationalist politics. This included clashes with US-based energy conglomerates sparked by his assertion of greater national control over the exploitation of the country’s petroleum resources, his partial nationalizations, his economic backing for Cuba, and his pursuit of closer economic ties with US imperialism’s rival, China.

In April 2002, the CIA backed a coup that saw Chavez briefly ousted from power and imprisoned before he was restored to the presidential palace by a combination of loyal military units and a popular revolt among the more impoverished layers of the population.

Throughout Chavez’s presidency, Washington utilized agencies such as USAID, the National Endowment for Democracy and the CIA to fund and advise a right-wing political opposition that had its main base of support among sections of the Venezuelan oligarchy, which bitterly resented Chavez’s appeal to the poor as well as his own mixed-race and lower-middle class origins. Despite Chavez’s repeated victories in contested elections, successive US administrations and the American mass media sought to cast his rule as illegitimate and dictatorial.

As sure as the sun rises in the east we can count on seeing a host of North America’s most prominent “conservatives” and right-wingers hyperventilate in the days ahead about what a horrible “friend of Castro” Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was. There will be obituaries that refer to Chavez as a “communist” or a “dictator” or a “strong man” or worse. But the simple fact remains: Chavez, who died of cancer at the age of 58, was the only president of Venezuela in modern memory who did ANYTHING for the poor people of that country who make up the vast majority of its nearly 30 million citizens.

Poor Venezuelans take back their streets by dismantling barricades; middle class protestors respond by shooting two of them, killing Griselda Figueroa, the woman speaking at the beginning of this video.

United States in the name of democracy and freedom have kidnapped our planet. While in Mexico thousands of people disappear every year. United States is concerned about Venezuela. While human rights activists, journalists are murdered daily in Honduras. United States is concerned about Venezuela. While huge mass graves are found in Colombia. United States cares about Venezuela. US has no moral right to accuse anyone of human rights violation because this country has committed the greatest crimes against humanity in the world. The Venezuelan government only crime is to have dignified the lives of their poorest citizens. US just lie, and lie We are still expected them to find the weapons of mass destruction that Saddam Hussein had supposedly in Iraq but Unfortunately I’m very sure most of the American people will believe blindly what CNN and the Congress is saying about Venezuela.

    Senate Passes Venezuela Sanctions Bill

    at 8:21 PM Monday, December 8, 2014

    From The Hill:

Senate sanctions Venezuelan human rights violators

The Senate passed a bill Monday that would sanction officials violating the human rights of Venezuelan protestors.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) introduced S. 2142, which the Senate passed by voice-vote.

The Venezuela Defense of Human Rights and Civil Society Act directs President Obama to sanction any current or former Venezuelan government official who violated the rights of anti-government protestors this year.

Menendez’s bill comes as peaceful protestors in Venezuela have been killed and tortured by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Ranking member Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) released his hold on the legislation this summer.

“A regional dialogue remains the best option to help Venezuelans find a negotiated, democratic way forward that addresses systematic violations of human rights,” Corker said. “But the Venezuelan government’s complicity with criminal activity that threatens its neighbors and the U.S. demands a firm response from our country and other nations.”

The bill also states U.S. support for the protestors and an open democracy in the South American country.
